Healthy Bodies, Healthy Families
In partnership with the American Diabetes Association, LHCC parents have just completed a 12 week program to combat diabetes and encourage healthy lifestyles. Project Power provided scales, smartwatches, a health coaching app, and our fantastic coach Karen (https://www.instagram.com/exercising.dietitian/) to guide us to healthier habits.
We had in person classes every Tuesday in January. In those classes we learned to use the tools, began tracking our meals and exercise, and reviewed nutrition basics. Every class was a chance to connect with one another, learn from our coach, and practice making healthy choices for ourselves and our families.
In February and March, we had class every other week. We used the project power app to track our health goals. We shared feedback, tips, and encouragement as we took the steps needed to reverse or prevent type II diabetes and other chronic health problems.
I was honored to be part of this group. It is one thing to wish that you were healthier. Or to feel badly about your health. Or to think about making a change. It is another thing to truly learn new habits and put them into action. It is a special and powerful thing for a group of women to join together to support one another and to actually take steps in a good direction together.
This kind of growth and support are not just for physical health. At LHCC, we work every day to build a loving community in which real growth and change are possible. We believe that God is at work in the world, loving us into new life. We believe that when we work together with love and mutual encouragement, our kids and families can thrive.
We are grateful to our partners from Atrium Health, Mecklenburg County Public Health, and the American Diabetes Association Project Power program for their support to make this opportunity possible for our families. Special thanks to Karen Correa, our coach, Zumba teacher, and friend.
