Navigating Uncertainty Amidst Changing Immigration Policies
Dear LHCC Family and Immigrant Neighbors,
We know and understand that the recent changes in immigration policy may have caused uncertainty and concern within our community. We want to assure you that Learning Help Centers of Charlotte (LHCC) stands with you and are committed to providing support and guidance during this time. Based on the advice of legal professionals, we wish to share the following four perspectives:
1. Limited Risk for Parents
It's important to emphasize that the risk of parents being deported is limited under current circumstances. The focus of enforcement actions is primarily on individuals with criminal records or those who pose a threat to public safety. Families with no criminal history and who are actively working towards legal status are generally not targeted for deportation.
2. Unclear Policy Changes
We acknowledge that the specific details and implementation of the new policies are still evolving. This can lead to confusion and anxiety. However, it's crucial to rely on credible sources of information and avoid spreading misinformation. Stay informed by consulting with legal experts and trusted community organizations. We have immigration experts ready to assist as needed and will be having listening sessions early in 2025.
3. Secure a Power of Attorney
To safeguard your family's well-being, consider creating a power of attorney document. This legal document empowers a trusted individual to make decisions on your behalf in case of an unforeseen situation. This proactive step can provide peace of mind and ensure your family's needs are met.
4. Don't Spread Fear
It's essential to maintain a sense of calm and avoid spreading fear and rumors. Sharing inaccurate information can create unnecessary panic and harm our community's overall well-being. Instead, focus on factual information and encourage open dialogue and support among neighbors.
Remember, you are not alone. LHCC is part of a community of partners and churches that values diversity and inclusivity. We stand together in solidarity, offering support and resources to help you navigate these uncertain times. Please reach out to one of our LHCC staff members if you have any questions or concerns.
Working while it is day.
