Reflections From Summer Interns

This summer at LHCC we have had two interns with us through the Mayors Youth Employment Program; which “provides all Charlotte youth with equitable career development opportunities to explore the world of work, build social capital, and enhance economic mobility.” Both of our interns are rising high school seniors who have helped our summer camp program tremendously. They have assisted in the planning, execution, and management of summer camp. Their tasks have ranged from social media and videography, data analysis of iReady, to leading group activities at camp. The kids at LHCC have had a blast with them over the summer and we are all sad that their time with us is wrapping up soon. Both interns hope to stay involved as volunteers as their busy schedules as high school seniors allow! Here is what they had to say...

TY SAYS...Being a camp intern is more than just a job; it's an adventure filled with fun, learning, and personal growth. From the moment you arrive at camp, you're greeted with the sounds of laughter, the sight of kids running around, and the feeling of excitement in the air. Some days were long, but the kids know how to make it worthwhile. As an intern, you get to be a part of this magical environment, helping to create unforgettable memories for the campers while also having a blast yourself. You get to spend your days surrounded by happy, energetic kids. I learned some things and was able to teach the kids and find different fun ways to get the kids to interact and have fun! I was able to share some of my best assets being that I have been at Northwest School of The Arts, and I got to teach the kids how to be my honorary actors and actresses. I got to share some of the things that make me, me! I also got to learn different ways to make bracelets and come back and teach them to our wonderful campers. The friendships you form and the skills you gain will stay with you long after the summer ends. You will learn how to better your leadership and be role models to the campers as the days go by. If you're looking for a fulfilling and enjoyable way to spend your summer, becoming a camp intern is the way to go.

MADYSON SAYS...Summer with LHCC has been the most enjoyable and incredible experience. When I walked in the first day, I was so anxious about what I would have to do or say. However, everyone is so welcoming and supportive because everyone wants to ensure that our campers have the best time here. LHCC gives out so many opportunities to each one of their staff members and volunteers to allow them to be comfortable. With my passion in cheerleading, I was given the opportunity to teach the campers a little bit about life as one. From stretching to arm movements and even to actual cheers, every young girl I was able to teach was amazing. LHCC gave me so many opportunities and friendships from other staff members or even from kids that I will keep so deep in my heart forever. I will definitely be coming back next summer so this is not goodbye, but this is see you later LHCC!
